Brief Intro — Introduction to Computers

Computers have evolved from massive, room-filling machines to powerful devices that fit in our pockets, fundamentally changing how we live and work. Understanding their history and basic components is the first step toward mastering modern technology.

In this activity, you'll explore the five generations of computing, how data is processed into information, and the different ways we classify computer systems today.

🧠 Overview Computer fundamentals

Computer – an electronic device that processes data and instructions. It follows the IPO cycle: Input → Process → Output.

Data = raw facts (e.g., student marks). Information = processed, organized data (e.g., sorted list with totals).

⚡ CPU (Central Processing Unit) – brain of computer. Fill in the blanks:

  • ALU – performs & logic operations
  • Control Unit all computer components
  • Registers – provide storage

🔹 Input devices: keyboard, mouse, scanner, microphone … 🔸 Output devices: monitor, printer, speaker, projector.

Software = programs + data. System software (OS) vs. Application software (Word, Excel).
